  • The New Group Format on Facebook

    Last year many of us received news and messages letting us know that our group on Facebook was scheduled to be archived. This of course occurred when Facebook decided yet again to update (change) their layout yet AGAIN. Whether you’re a group owner or an admin you probably got this notification more than once. This was a controlled upgrade by Facebook in an effort not to disrupt the site too much by having everyone upgrading their Facebook groups all at once. This is similar to how they did the Page migration.

    If you never selected the Upgrade option for your Group then your photos and discussions may have been lost. There was also concern as to whether all the members would carry over into the new group or not, but luckily they did. Those that were banned from the groups didn’t make it into the switch either so that’s cool.

    One new feature with Facebook groups that many people probably don’t care too much for is that every time a wall post is made or anything is done in the group, members will get an e-mail notification. That may have only lasted for so long though because I think recently Facebook got the message and cut down on all the e-mail notifications. Before then (or still today) users have to go and manually adjust their settings if they don’t want constant Group updates/notifications sent to them. This is done in your settings. Just like everything else on Facebook (i.e. Chat, Privacy, notifications, etc..) you have to manually adjust it or turn it off if you don’t want to be bothered. An easy way to customize who you will and won’t get all the e-mail notifications from is by going to Account > Account Settings > Notifications > Change E-mail settings for individual groups. This should bring you to a list of all your groups and the option to select or unselect boxes.

    The Group change also made it so you have to set up a group e-mail since Facebook converted their old inboxes into the new message system. You can only send out mass messages to group members now if the group has less than 250 members. Enjoy your new Groups or if you have a change of heart try creating a Fan Page.     Getting A Fan Page Started

    Today most businesses or companies are dipping into social media to enhance their business. Just about any business or website sets up a Facebook page to put information out there to users and drive more business or traffic. Did you know that there are 500 million active users on Facebook? People spend more than 700 billion hours a month on the social networking site! The more likes a fan page has the better! For each “Like” there are like 10 viewers, so imagine how many people one can reach with lots of likes on Facebook. Twitter and Facebook are great faucets for businesses to get exclusive deals out there, notify clients of updates to their website or new products and services being offered, and just a great way to interact on a more “personable” level with consumers and similar businesses alike.

    To set up a Facebook fan page, one simply logs in to Facebook (or create an account first, if you don’t already have one) and goes to facebook.com/pages. Click on “Create Page”, which can be found in the upper right hand corner. Next you’ll be asked what category you want your page classified as. The list you’ll choose from includes these 6 categories:

    -Local Business or Place

    -Company, Organization or Institution

    -Brand/Product

    -Artist, Band or Public Figure

    -Entertainment

    -Cause or Community


    Select which one best describes the genre of your page. Next, fill in information about your business/group/organization like the name, address, phone number, etc. Make sure to include your website and when the organization was founded if applicable. Once you have agreed to the Page terms, click on “Get Started”. Make sure to upload a picture to your page. This can be a logo, photo of a person or picture of your store – whatever represents your organization best and helps to build your brand. The picture file must be smaller than 4MB and can only be square or vertical rectangle. The next step involves getting people to your page that are already on Facebook. You can do this by suggesting it to your friends. A box will pop up for this and you can just start typing in names and highlight them in blue as they pop up. After choosing names and your ready for them to know about it, click “Send Recommendations” and the selected people will be sent an invitation. In order to reach out to contacts in your e-mail click on “Import Contacts”. People that are not already on FB will get an e-mail invitation while FB users get a recommendation widget.

    Once the photo is up and fans are on board, start to engage! Post status updates. You can post links, articles, etc. Upon reaching 25 fans on your page, you’re given the right to reserve what’s called a vanity URL. This allows your Facebook URL to specifically include your business name. (i.e., www.facebook.com/yourbusinessnamehere). Admins can also be assigned once your fan base has increased. It’ll allow more than one person access to make posts under the fan page name. Creating a fan page is pretty simple and could help your business to grow!
